Psychological Effects Of War Has On Soldiers - 821 Words

War has been known to cause negative mental effects among soldiers. Whether it be PTSD, depression, or a change in personality, war takes its toll. Because of its application to the real world, this common theme is often expressed in literature. In Tim O’Brien’s â€Å"The Things They Carried,† he explains the physical and mental burdens that soldiers carry. He also describes how these burdens create psychological stress and eliminate soldiers’ ability to feel normal emotion. Ernest Hemingway’s â€Å"Soldier’s Home† also discusses the negative mental effects created by war. He accomplishes this by explaining the inability of a soldier to assimilate back into society after returning home. Although â€Å"The Things They Carried† and â€Å"Soldier’s Home† both express the psychological effects that war has on soldiers, the authors use different tones, plots, and types of mental effects to display this common theme. Oâ €™Brien’s matter-of-fact tone is quite different from Hemingway’s depressing tone. In â€Å"The Things They Carried,† a soldier â€Å"kicked [a] boy’s head, watched the flies scatter, and said, It’s like with that old TV show-Paladin† (O’Brien 1183). The narrator of the story does not react to this absurd action. This emotionless tone reinforces the effect of war on individuals. After enough psychological stress, soldiers become empty and lose any emotion they still have. In â€Å"Soldier’s Home,† on the other hand, Krebs states that he â€Å"[does not] love anybody† (Hemingway 5).
